FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Frankie:
Q: I was so sad to hear of Frankie’s passing, will this affect the Frankie’s 95th Birthday Festival in anyway?
A: Frankie made it clear that if he didn’t make it to his birthday festival, he wanted everyone to celebrate his life rather than mourn his passing. The Festival will allow the swing dance community to come together in Frankie’s hometown, the birthplace of Lindy Hop, to grieve, to heal and to celebrate his life in a way that will pay tribute to this extraordinary man. As an inclusive community, we think that anyone who wants to be a part of this momentous occasion should be allowed the opportunity. We are reopening registration and encouraging everyone to make the journey to New York City for the greatest celebration of Frankie and the gift of his life.
Q: Is there something I can do to honor Frankie's passing?
A: Live, love, and dance. Also, the organizers of the Festival established the Frankie Manning Fund (see next question). All proceeds from the 95th Birthday Festival will go towards this Fund. If you would like to add a further contribution, please send your donation to HSDS, PO Box 980581, Houston, TX 77098, c/o Frankie Manning Fund.
Q: What is the Frankie Manning Fund?
A: The idea for a Frankie Manning Fund came from The Frankie Manning 95th Birthday Festival. The organizers decided that if the festival generated any revenue in excess of expenses they would give this money to Frankie to be used in any way he saw fit to promote Frankie's legacy and swing music and lindy hop world-wide. This money was to be housed at the Houston Swing Dance Society in a Frankie Manning Fund account and would be disbursed at the request and under the direction of Frankie (one example of how Frankie might have used the money was to provide "dance scholarships" to kids from Harlem to help support them to attend international camps and events like Herrang).
Prior to Frankie's passing he identified three people who he felt would best represent his legacy and were best positioned to make decisions about any fund established in his name: Chazz Young (Frankie's Son), Cynthia Millman (Frankie's Biographer), Judy Pritchett (Frankie's long time companion and someone dedicated to the history of the Lindy Hop and Frankie's legacy). Now that Frankie is no longer with us we are asking these three people to advise us on how we might best be able to distribute these funds to best remember and honor Frankie and to promote the dance he loved. A portion of the funds collected may go to help with Frankie's funeral, burial and tombstone expenses or in some other way that would be most helpful to his family.
H1N1 (swine flu) Concerns:
Q: Are the event organizers going to refund money or change plans for the weekend in any way due to the H1N1 (swine flu) situation?
A: We plan to proceed with Frankie’s 95th Festival as scheduled, and are not offering refunds due to the H1N1 scare. We are of course concerned and will monitor the situation closely. That said, as at any dance event, if you are not feeling well or suspect you may have any type of flu or other transmissible illness, please stay home. In addition, if you have recently traveled to Mexico or been in close contact with someone that has or is suspected of having the flu please stay home. You will be sad that you couldn’t come, we will be sad that you couldn’t come, but 2,000 lindy hoppers will thank you.
