VIDEO/PHOTO GUIDELINES FOR FRANKIE 95 GLOBAL SHIM SHAM

Video Guidelines

Thanks so much for participating in the Global Shim Sham video project! Please read the following technical guidelines carefully. We apologize for how complicated this might seem, but we want to produce the best possible compilation for Frankie.

Making a Quicktime movie using H.264 codec is still good for the YouTube submission, but for your real footage, we would like to receive a DV file (i.e., the original format file) or your miniDV tape so that we can keep the original quality of your footage as much as possible. The details are specified below:

Recommendations for shooting the video:

  • SD footage only please (i.e. no high def)
  • Shoot in NTSC format (which uses 30 fps or 29.97 fps to be exact)
  • If this makes no sense to you, shoot at the highest quality footage that you can and send the original footage to us.

Recommendations for delivering the footage to us:

  • Original DV file: If possible, output/export your footage or your edited sequence as a DV file from your editing software. The instruction for Final Cut Pro users is described below. The final file size should be slightly less than 700 MB which can be sent via the internet file transfer services or can be saved in a CD or DVD disc and mailed to us.
  • Final Cut Pro users: open your sequence and go to Export / Quick Time Movie, and that will take you to 'save as' screen. Use Current Setting, Include Audio and Video, and make sure that "Make Movie Self-Contained" is checked.
  • We would still recommend making a quick time movie using H.264 codec as a compressor for your YouTube posting but for your original footage, we would like to receive a DV file instead of a compressed Quick Time movie.
  • If you edited your sequence, an alternative way to outputting a DV file, is to re-record your edited sequence in your editing software back to a mini DV tape and mail the tape to us. You should be able to do so by connecting your video device to your editing software using fire wire connection.
  • If you didn't edit your footage, or if the information above does not make any sense to you, you can send us your original miniDV tape you used for recording the shim sham.
  • Please do NOT send ready-to-play video DVDs! If you are sending the footage on disc, please send data discs with files but never a DVD that would play in a regular DVD player.
  • Tapes: if you are sending tapes to us, the best format is MiniDV 29.97, which is what most SD camcorders shoot at.

Thank you all for your participation and all the fantastic videos. Your work has been great inspiration for all of us.

The due date for video submissions is April 1, 2009.

Photo Guidelines

Thanks so much for participating in the Frankie Manning Birthday Card project! We will be printing the best of these photos, so we want you to upload the highest quality photos that you can. Please keep these recommended settings in mind as you shoot your photo:

  • We prefer 300 DPI, and not lower than 150 DPI
  • Photo dimensions should be around 4 x 6" (or the metric equivalent)
  • If this confuses you, just use the highest settings on your digital camera. No camera phone or PDA device images, please.

If you do not have a Flickr account, you can also email us the photos to Frankie95card@gmail.com.

The due date for photo submissions is April 1, 2009.
